The first project started in July 2011 when Diane met Astou at Broadway and 80th in New York City.

Astou founded Dioum African Art 21 years ago and has worked all these years to help the women of Senegal.

Diane fell in love with Astou’s baskets. They are unique to Senegal and come in many designs, colors, shapes and sizes.

Diane provided the upfront funding to “hire” the women to make an entire container of baskets.

This meant that the women had “jobs”, food, and the materials they needed to make their beautiful artwork.

We provided food for mothers, daughters, and children.

Over 50 women have been hired to make the baskets for the 1st Container.

Everyone contributed to help make the project a success.

Family and friends helped to move the baskets from the Mekhes Village to the container in Dakar.

The shipment arrives in Nov. 13, 2011, just in time for holiday shopping.
